Therapy for Anxiety

Understanding Anxiety

Life comes with periods of unease and nervousness. Anxiety, like any other feeling, is trying to communicate something to you. Do you know what it’s trying to say? People experiencing anxiety often encounter one or more of the following:

  • Feeling “out of control,” “on edge,” nervous, restless, irritable

  • Racing thoughts

  • Avoidance of people, places or new things

  • Procrastination

  • Overplanning and preparing

  • Excessive worry

  • Double or triple checking things

  • Perfectionist tendencies

  • Assuming the worst

  • Impatience

  • Increased heart rate, muscle tension, stomach issues, shortness of breath, sweaty palms, trembling, hot/cold sensations

  • Difficulty tolerating uncertainty or the unknown

  • Indecision

  • Self-doubt

  • Fear of judgment, rejection, or humiliation

Anxiety doesn’t have to be a terrible thing. It’s a normal aspect of our human experience, serving as our alert system to indicate when something feels unsafe or uncomfortable. However, if anxiety gets in the way of living your desired life, exploring it in therapy may be beneficial.

Therapy can help

If this resonates with you, I want you to know that it’s common to feel hesitant about opening up about what you’re going through, even to those closest to you. Many clients have shared with me that taking that first step, reaching out for help, was challenging. However, seeking the help you need is a sign of strength. Contrary to what some may think, prioritizing yourself is not selfish; it’s crucial, especially when feeling overwhelmed. It’s possible to feel better. Picture a life where you could:

  • Gain a better understanding of your fears

  • Approach problem-solving in helpful ways

  • Regain control over how you respond to your anxiety

  • Improve your relationship with yourself and others

  • Feel more aware of how your body experiences anxiety

  • Refuse to let anxiety dictate your decisions

Even if you are not sure how therapy could help you, or feel nervous about beginning, please know that these feelings are normal. I’m here to help you with your concerns. I’ll assist you in sorting through your thoughts and feelings; offer feedback; explore solutions; and share insights from scientific research on anxiety.

Anxiety is highly manageable, and learning more about it will equip you to navigate challenges with more ease and less dread. Therapy provides a space to confront your fears, learn practical tools, and gain perspective, ultimately empowering you to navigate difficult emotions and situations. Over time, my clients often discover that it’s possible to find joy in the present moment and feel more secure. While anxiety is a natural aspect of life, it doesn’t have to dominate or ruin your life.
